Tech Titans Clash: Meta CEO Zuckerberg Critiques Apple's VR Vision

Apple sold over 200,000 Vision Pro units since Jan 2024, beating Meta's 20 million Quest units sold since 2019

The ongoing rivalry between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Apple continues as Zuckerberg takes another jab at Apple's Vision Pro VR headset in a discussion with Mosaic Ventures partner Benedict Evans on Threads. Evans criticized the "tradeoffs" in Apple's $3,500 product, suggesting that Meta's $500 competitor, the Quest 3, is superior.

Zuckerberg responded to Evans' post by emphasizing that Meta isn't claiming the devices are the same but rather asserting that the Quest is a better product. He pointed out potential drawbacks in Apple's device, such as weight, motion blur, and lack of precision inputs, stating that if Meta's devices have similar issues in 3-5 years, it would be a significant regression.

Despite acknowledging Apple's higher resolution, Zuckerberg argued that the Vision Pro makes many other tradeoffs, making it worse in most ways according to Meta's perspective. Apple has reportedly sold over 200,000 Vision Pro units since its pre-order launch, surpassing Meta's 20 million Quest units sold between 2019 and February of the previous year.

Meta's Reality Labs division achieved $1 billion in revenue for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2023, attributed to a strong holiday season for the Quest. Zuckerberg's recent criticism comes shortly after he reviewed the Vision Pro on Instagram, providing feedback on various aspects from price to specifications, and also expressing his dissatisfaction with Apple's vision for a VR headset at a company meeting. The competition between Meta and Apple in the virtual reality space remains intense, with both companies striving to establish dominance in the market.
